The first edition of the 8bit Extravaganza is in the books and wow what a show we had.

We started the show off with some news items set off by the title of Actraiser II, which I've never actually played but always thought that the music would be perfect for a news intro.
Song 1:
After ranting about the lack of support for Type C, which is actually a classic orchestra song backwards the actual name escapes me at the moment, we went into "A Gift From Moscow" remix of Type A (Korobeiniki) by McVaffe courtesy of OCRemix.org
Song 2:
From there I butchered the history of Tetris from the book: "The Ultimate History of Videogames" by Steven Kent, and then segwayed into "Let's Play Some Tetris MotherFuckers" by Happy Hardcore.
Song 3:
Immediately after that song we heard "Love me or hate me" by Lady Soveriegn briefly played because in the video there are Tetris blocks falling and the beat is based loosely on Tetris.
Song 4:
After more information on Tetris, and Tetris DS we went into another OCRemix.org song titled "Linear Groove" by Chthonic which I could not pronounce to save my life. Great version of the familiar Tetris theme which seperated itself from the other remixed by putting it's own baseline into the song which took it in a new direction.
Song 5:
After going over the upcomming 8bit Extravaganza Tournament and the controversy which we left off on which will pickup again next week. The rock remixes are a personal favorite so next we heard "Type B" by the Minibosses. The Minibosses have been a force in the retro videogame music tribute rock band scene and have proven why with this song. This song inspired this tribute show to see who could top their version.
Song 6:
There was more talking after the Minibosses song originally but after we ran into computer problems I lost the last 15 mins of the original show. So as a means of giving something back to the podcast audience we've thrown in the "Thirty Plus-Mix" by R3forged. This is the best techno style remix that I've heard in regards to Tetris, and it's a song that didn't make the original show during the recording due to time constraints, but here it is!
Song 7:
Following the best techno style version of Tetris we've come across, the best rock version of Tetris had to follow. Powerglove provides us with the "Tetris Theme" that is just spectacular. They do a medley and then go into the faster versions with excellent heaviness. They also include the Russian "Hey!" for authentic feel. This song is awesome.
Song 8:
I didn't get to include this song in the episode, but if you can find "Epic Tetris" by Pronobozo it's definitely one of the best songs to check out. The only problem with the song is that it's about 1:30 long, which really leaves you hanging as that is no where near long enough for the quality of work which was produced.
With that the show aired on Kutztown University Radio on 88.3 FM, 1670 AM, Service Electric Cable Channel 24, Hometown Utilicom Cable Channel 44.

Show Notes
Hardware:
Dell Inspiron 5150 notebook, microphone, Koss Headphones
Software:
Shoutcast Server 1.9.8, Shoutcast Source v 1.9.0
-With a little help from Tash who pointed me to PortForward.com I was able to finally get the stream up and out.
-With a little help from Jeff I was able to figure out that the microphone and music could not coexist on this edition of the 8bit extravaganza. It was one or the other.
Even with these obstacles in the way the Tetris tribute was an amazing show!
I suggest you tune in live because as we perfect the art of recording the 8bit Extravaganza we ran into a snag at the end of the show and only the live listeners got to hear the entire 1st episode.

Contra 4 Update - Defeated Easy Unlocked Challenges
Contra 4, one of the hardest games ever, was conquered in a sense yesterday when I finally just sat down and defeated the game on Easy. This unlocked the challenges mode, which I must say is AWESOME.

8-bit Extravaganza: Tetris Tribute
So the first show will feature one of the most addictive game in video gaming history:
Tetris.
And lets be honest, ever since the debut of this game developers have attempted to recreate the worldwide frenzy that was born out of a Russian mathematician's head, and have failed each time.
The show will give the history of Tetris, including music from the RARE Tengen version of Tetris which was basically banned in the US!
Remixes already on tap:
Epic Tetris from pronobozo
Powerglove
Minibosses
Happy Hardcore
and 3 carefully selected OC Remixes.
Stay tuned to this site and KUR for updates!

Nintendo Channel
So I boot up the Wii for some Brawl action yesterday, and I have 1 message waiting for me, from Nintendo. The message informs me that a new Channel is available called the "Nintendo" Channel. Immediately I go and grab this channel, and while it's downloading I remembered reading something about a DS channel available in Japan a few months ago. I hoped this was it.
The channel downloads and I open it up. A video starts playing hyping up WiiFit and MarioKart, Brawl, and other games. Below a "VideoList" button shows you a list of the videos available. I select a DS game for Brain Age 2, and then hit the big red "Information" button. Once in there I scrolled down and found the "Download a demo for this title" text and we were off.
My Wii is now a DS download station. F'N awesome.
Demos tried:
Brain Age 2
GamePlay: Brain exercises if you wanted more tests. I failed miserably on the Rock Paper Scissors test, they show a hand and you have to either win or lose. For example if they show paper and it says win, you yell out "Scissor". Well I did suck at this but I will say that Scissor had the hardest time being deciphered by the game. It actually stopped and restarted due to the fact that it was having trouble understanding me.
Verdict: If you don't have Brain Age, pick it up. Since I do I would like to see more puzzles from the game in order for it to make me want to pick it up.
Jam Session
GamePlay: Very interesting game, lots of potential, clumsy interface. Had a lot of fun with this one, you can strum a guitar string, and based on the stylus' direction and speed the guitar sounds different. Very intiutive. Also, you have a chord selection by using the D-Pad or buttons based on your hand selection. This also worked pretty well. However due to things being locked for the full game you only had the 4 default chords to play, which was disappointing. The best part was you could record your songs, and they encourage you to sing with the built in microphone to have a full on jam session. But wait! The recording does not record the vocals! DAMMIT!!
Verdict:So all in all a very good concept, but due to the lack of a good interface for the menus and effects, plus the lack of recording the voice, I don't see this one being picked up.....pun intended.
Disney Friends
GamePlay: Kill yourself. The control scheme is just wrong, the graphics are trying to do too much and the objective of the game is pointless.
Verdict: Boil water, reach into bottom of pot, repeat.
Rayman Raving Rabbits 2:
GamePlay: Mini-game madness. I chose 1 minigame where you had to drag certain colored boxes into the funnel? and then you had a certain time limit to complete the task. The time limit wasn't clear and the dragging of the boxes was good, I just sucked.
Verdict: For quick fun, pick it up, it's nuts!
