061808 - 8bit Extravaganza - Block 5 Recap!
The 4th edition of what is now referred to as "Season 2" of the 8bit Extravaganza is in the books and this was the first EVER 2 hour show for the 8bit Extravaganza!

The Show
We are sticking with the "Previously on 24" idea to recap the previous show since it give the audience a chance to catch up to the hilariousness in under 2 minutes, typically. This one I actually edited on Wednesday while riding in the car back from work as a coworker drove up the turnpike.
The Matchup: (1) Legend of Zelda vs (8) NES Play Action Football
Song 1:
The Legend of Zelda is one of the most amazing games ever created due to the fact when it was created it was the first free roaming video game ever. The choice was open to the player as there was no set path like in sidescrolling games of it's day. The game defied categorization as it pulled from many elements of other games, but was an entire new experience itself. The soundtrack was completely amazing as once again each different scenario in the game had music to accompany it. A masterpiece.
On the other hand we have NES Play Action Football which had cool features, an unique isometric view, and actual players and teams from the NFL, also a game which featured 10 players on each side with no flickering on the screen as well as Nester to announce who won and lost after the game. Even with all these features NES Play Action Football never really took off for whatever reason, probably the view, but in this battle really stood no chance against the Legend of Zelda.
Winner: Legend of Zelda via Chatroom

The Matchup: (4) Tecmo Super Bowl vs (5) Marble Madness
Song 2:
Tecmo's sequel to the awesome Tecmo Bowl was one of the best games of all time according to NEScentral and a game which may be a contender to take out the Legend of Zelda.
The song was found randomly on the internet by a punk style band and is one of the coolest songs about a game I've heard in a long time.
Song 3:

And it's opponent, hailing from the Czech Republic this is Marble Madness. Another simple innovative game where you control a marble through an obstacle course/maze, the overwhelming love of this game destroyed Tecmo Super Bowl in a landslide victory with a complete shutout in the live chatroom!
Winner: Marble Madness via Chatroom!

The Matchup: (3) Excitebike vs (6) Pro Wrestling
Song 4
Excitebike is one of the most beloved original NES titles created by Nintendo, and we had a rendition of the victory song from Excitebike created on Mario Paint.
Song 5:
And taking on Excitebike is another NES title created by Nintendo for the NES, the button mashing, wrist-straining, limosuine riding, styling, profiling......Pro Wrestling. We had a man on an electric guitar re-create the sounds of the game in near perfect fashion for this battle.
In the end people's loves of riding bikes overwhelmed the wrist straining master of the wrist lock as Excitebike downs Pro Wrestling in the chatroom.
Winner: Excitebike via Chatroom

The Matchup: (2) Paperboy vs (7) Friday the 13th
Song 6:
Paperboy was a great game for the NES which was a favorite of mine, and we found Paperboy Peaperboayh OC_ReMix for your listening pleasure. At this time Mike McGovernale called up with his pick which we'll discuss right now.
He decided to choose Friday the 13th. I saw him in the chatroom rallying for such an outcome and when he called the hotline I demanded to know why.
I became apparent that Mike has never actually played Friday the 13th. Yes Jason is more badass then Paperboy, but in Friday the 13th for the NES you are trying to survive Jason. This game is not difficult because the designers of the game want it so, it's difficult because of horrid design. Continuing to discuss this with Mike led me to start to hate his very existence, so as the audience heard I had to declare him a DOPE.
Thus the DOPERULE was called in to deal with such a matter. (It was pointed out that last week I declared Friday the 13th a sleeper to win the whole tournament and then DOPERULED it)
  • DOPERULE: When a caller makes a choice in the field of 64 that is in the opinion of the host an idiotic decision, the host can overturn this choice. The host gets 1 DOPERULE per show.
  • EXECUTIVE CHALLENGE: A caller can challenge the last ruling, the vote then goes to the chatroom where we tally the votes and the winner is determined.
Song 7:
Friday the 13th had a good OC Remix that included clips from the movies so we played Panic at Camp Crystal Lake.
Block 5 Final 4:
(1) Legend of Zelda vs (5) Marble Madness
and
(3) Excitebike vs (2) Paperboy

The Matchup: (1) Legend of Zelda vs (5) Marble Madness
This matchup left me pulling my hair out. The early vote from the chatroom came in and the impossible was hapenning. Marble Madness had a 2 vote lead on the Legend of Zelda and I was speechless as Mets Bennett chose the Czech Republic video game over one of the best games in the history of the NES.
The audience had spoken. All the notes I had prepared for Zelda, all the remixes and work of Shigeru Miyamoto are out the window. On this show the 8bit Extravaganza the game Marble Madness was about to put the Legend of Zelda out of the tournament.
Thankfully Angel gave some sanity as he voted for Zelda, as did Zack, and Rob Pierce as he brought up the great point that, "Come on the cartridge was gold!"
So Zelda with an extremely late rally comes back and squeaks by Marble Madness to move on in the tournament.
Winner: (1) Legend of Zelda via hotline

The Matchup: (2) Paperboy vs (3) Excitebike
The battle of bikes took place in the 5th block of the 8bit Extravaganza, but the audience resoundingly took Excitebike in the this matchup pushing once again two internally developed NES titles against each other.

Final Matchup Block 5
(1) Legend of Zelda vs (3) Excitebike

The Matchup: (1) Legend of Zelda vs (3) Excitebike
The end for Excitebike was like we all want it, quick and painless. This was in the end a mismatch in the favor of Zelda, as Excitebike was a quick game with one goal and the only depth to the game was the design stage, but you couldn't save it. Zelda moves on through the tournament as the survivor of block 5!

Bracket Summary for Block 5:
(1) Legend of Zelda

The Show

Big news as Brandon came through HUGE for the show when he found the original recording of the intro we used and that really put it all together and it feels like the show is officially back!!
During this show the concept came up to put in NES commercials and such so at times you will hear me going to break, unfortunately I missed one in post-editing so you hear me go to break and then come back immmediately! Oh well.
The Matchup: (1) TMNT (Original) vs (8) Major League Baseball
Song 1:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was something that took over everything as we grew up. The song "TMNT" by the Neskimos took this game's various themes and did right by them by producing a song which took you through the various stages, and then hit you with the heavy stuff right when you needed it. This matchup was really no contest at all, the game Major League Baseball was abysmal in gameplay and the only noteable thing about it was the fact that it carried the official lisencee seal of Major League Baseball.
Winner: TMNT via Chatroom

The Matchup: (4) Metal Gear vs (5) Dr. Mario
Song 2:
Metal Gear's failure to provide english translations explain the title of this song: "Uh Oh! The Beat Have Started to Move" by Khalal, Nintendo Guru. In the original Metal Gear game the phrase is "The truck have started to move". This complex game from Ultra (TMNT being the 1st) was trashed by Kojima as "complete garbage".
Song 3:
That leaves us with Dr. Mario and after slight difficulties with the audio and some bad editing we finally get to the excellent remix of Dr. Mario entitled "Burning Up" by Dj Redlight. The battle between these two was decided by our first caller this season, but not a new personality to the 8bit Extravaganza, Mets!, who goes Dr. Mario based on the fact that the Nintendo creation had better music. With Mets pushing Dr. Mario through to the final four, he informs us that he's got a Subway sandwich, some chocolate cookies, and a big bottle of ginger ale!
Winner: Dr. Mario via hotline by Mets!

The Matchup: (3) Mario 2 vs (6) Jackal
Song 4
Super Mario Bros 2 has some great music, and with a remix of the underground theme is McVaffe with "Underground Riddims".
Song 5:
Doing battle with this classic game is the number sixth seed Jackal, which personally was one of the great multiplayer games on the NES system. The game was under the radar of the mainstream for the most part, with other titles taking the gaming community by storm. Jackal was created by modified Double Dribble code, and then adapted for the NES with the Jeep rescuing the POWs. Taking the original soundtrack of Jackal we have another OCRemix title with "Mounted-Machine Gun Funk" by Beatdrop.

Winner: Mario 2 via tiebreaker from Will (originally by Andre via hotline)
Controversy:
After the official podcast recording there was debate on who was the winner, and after many phone calls to decide the fate of these titles, it was up to me to break the tie and Mario 2 prevailed. This controversy will be available to download soon, so stay tuned!
The Matchup: (2) Double Dragon II vs (7) Donkey Kong
Song 6:
Double Dragon II is such a classic game that I will be shocked if it doesn't win this bracket. The remix we have is courtesy of Sixto Sounds with "Twin Blood". Donkey Kong's impact was discussed however Double Dragon II: The Revenge was a number 2 seed for a reason.
Winner: Double Dragon II via hotline by Andre
Song 7:
Show ended with the playing of "Dr. Mario" by Vominitron. Another band who's rock versions of Nintendo songs are basically orgasmic. This was a masterpiece.

Bracket Summary for Block 4:
(1) TMNT vs (5) Dr. Mario
(2)Double Dragon II vs (3) Mario 2
