Show Notes: 8bitX - History of Beat Em Ups
Shaun created this great site, and I think we will use this site for quite some time.
http://8bitx.com/beatemups/
Hour 1:
For the first hour we went through the origins of the Beat Em Up genre, and we also heard the debut of Jake the Juice at the Movies segment!
Music: Double Dragon, Battletoads, and more from OC Remix, Neskimos, and some classic 8bit music from Kung Fu.
Hour 2:
2nd hour we saw the conclusion of 1/2 of the new Steel Sterling, and next week Scent of Blood! We also had a guest creeper on reading the Creepy Craigslist of the week, and the defense of Renegade as one of the top beat-em-ups ever as I played the game live on air.

Music: Bad Dudes, Double Dragon from Nerd Army, Neskimos, OC Remix, Final Fight OC Remix, and plenty more that escape me!
*Note: forgot to add the DOD folder to the show, which is why no DOD on this weeks' show!!
Next Week: History of Beat Em Ups continued!
Thanks for listening!

I challenge anyone who deems Renegade as a terrible game to prove to me that you've actually #1 played the game on an NES and #2 lasted more than 2:00.
Contact me: 8bitextravaganza@gmail.com
We also went through some Bad Dudes and compared the NSF files vs the NES sound directly. Boss battles were aired and commentated upon as they went down, 3-3 on the air!Contact me: 8bitextravaganza@gmail.com

Zelda Podcast
The 1st Hour of the Zelda Podcast will be put up again tonight when I return back from work, the wrong file was sent to the ftp server. I was listening at work and I found myself in shock because it is basically the unedited file, and lots of jumps in the music. I'll also be taking a look at the 2nd hour that was posted tonight too. Many apologies to the podcast audience.
Thanks,

8bit Extravaganza Preview: History of Beat Em Ups
[UPDATE]
Ha! Renegade has fallen! Monday night I have conquered the obsession that was Renegade's hold over me. It all ended with a fist to the face of Sabu, who weilds a GUN and just shoots you. 1 hit and your are dead! I hope to have screens for you soon...
Renegade was not without gamer-rage though, as a classic controller throwing moment happened in the maze-like Mission 4.
Update on this line: I must destroy Kim, who knows, she could be the leader of a huge crime syndicate who kidnaps small children for ransom to pay for her numerous operations to become Abobo in Double Dragon. According to this walkthrough, "She's the long lost sister of Abobo from the 'Double Dragon' series. " -HA! and a note I did NOT use the walkthrough during my quest, I almost did but could not live with myself if I used the walkthrough.
HI Score: 390,000+ (game doesn't store it after you win)
This week on The 8bit Extravaganza we will be going over the History of the Beat Em Ups!
Check out the research that we've been doing:
[Classic]
[Check out the 8bitx twitter for updates on the progress of the Renegade quest]
I found a staircase that led to a huge woman/man that just keeps kicking my ass named Kim. She is a beast, and the toughest battle yet. You can skip her but I feel like that is just avoiding the fight, and no true master of Renegade can look themselves in the eye and say they have defeated Renegade and the whole time there is a room with a Boss there without their head kicked in. I must destroy Kim, who knows, she could be the leader of a huge crime syndicate who kidnaps small children for ransom to pay for her numerous operations to become Abobo in Double Dragon.
I cannot let this happen.

Show Notes: 8bit Extravaganza - Zelda 1 vs Zelda 2
[images from this great article on 8bit levels in Little Big Planet]
Funny how we identify the first in the series as Zelda 1 not just Zelda....
I personally opened the show with my bias toward...Zelda 2. I don't know why exactly but this game struck a chord with me. It could be the dramatic opening, the art, the music, the way you leveled up and achieved new attacks, or the mysteries that needed solving, but the game had me. I fell in love with the game.
The audience mostly went with the original Zelda. How can you argue? It's amazing revolutionary gameplay, the way it spawned the open world adventure genre, and incorporated traditional role-playing elements seamlessly into the story, all while challenging the player to stick with it to the very end.
They setup the Nintendo Hotline from the game, but it was free to give Zelda players tips. From there they noticed people calling about more games and started charging.
Zelda 1 vs Zelda 2 is very much like comparing apples to oranges, but Zelda 2 always will be my favorite of the 8bit era.
Music: Goodness I was all over the place. Nesimos, DOD (virt, Ryan8bit), OC remixes (djpretzel, scott peeples, Rabbit Joint, countless others I'm sorry), Koji Kondo, and lots of the original sound from the games!

Happy Birthday Tetris!
This is the version of Tetris that most of us played. Tetris on the NES has a fascinating history, Atari released a version of Tetris under the label Tengen, and Nintendo released their version (pictured above) shortly after that. Nintendo won a lawsuit on November 13th 1989 stating that Nintendo owned the rights to Tetris.
"Anyone you talk to will certainly say that the best Tetris was the two-player Tetris that came out on Nintendo and was published by Tengen. Without a doubt it was the best Tetris. " -Ted Hoff, former senior vice president of Sales and Marketing: Atari Games Corportation
-Taken from the Ultimate History of Video Games by Stephen Kent

Radio Free Gamer (RFG):
Radio Free Gamer's debut was great! The show went really well and about an hour and a half got recorded until Justin's internet decided his show was over at that point. Excellent songs from the DOD and NEW GSO recordings never heard ANYWHERE else!
Be sure to catch the podcast for this episode: http://radiofreegamer.8bitx.com
8bit Extravaganza (8bitX)
1st Hour we recapped E3, and all the reporters did an amazing job!
The reporters we had were:
Brandon - Sony
Kevin K - Xbox
Rob - Arcade
Jeff - PC
Andre - Post Game Analyst
I was scheduled to do the Nintendo coverage but for time constraints I was bumped. We covered allot of Nintendo in the analysis and Andre gave the following grades:
Microsoft: B+
Sony: C
Nintendo: C (except the last 10 mins of the keynote so B-)
In the 2nd Hour another legenday Creepy Craigslist which involved a dog house & stuffed hamsters that you'd have to read to believe! The return of Steel Sterling, this time his tour of the country takes us to the Dakotas, and introduces us to a racist-ass asian named Wong....
Music was great as we featured Metroid Metal & Minibosses with Metroid since Metroid Other M is coming to the Wii!
Thanks for listening!!
